Radiant Chest of Drawers

I absolutely love my chest of drawers. Its beautiful design is truly a wonderful modern Masterpiece. The craftsmanship and perfection of detail is unique, and I love to sit and admire it. It is also extremely useful! It will be an inheritance to be treasured by my grandson and future generations.

Bog Oak Ripples Chest

The blanket chest is just what we had hoped for. The combination of the bog oak and the ripples reminds me of many happy times in the Outer Hebrides…. peat and the Atlantic! Every time I look at it, it makes me smile, thank you so much!

Sycamore Table Top

Ed designed and manufactured a lovely large rippled sycamore table top to fit on a base I’d already purchased. His service was outstanding, taking the time to source exactly the size of sycamore sheets I wanted, and liaising with the table base manufacturer to ensure a good fit. The top is often admired. I would highly recommend him.

Centrum Chest of Drawers

Dear Ed,
Just to thank you for coming up yesterday to deliver the very beautiful little chest which is now looking splendid in my sitting room. Thank you and the team for doing it so swiftly and well – I am very pleased indeed. If I have any questions about care I will come back to you but in the meantime I just intend to enjoy it!

Sewing Desk

We first saw Edward’s work at a Sussex Guild show and were very impressed with his workmanship, style and attention to detail. When we moved into our new home I wanted a dedicated craft space without taking over a whole room and met with Edward to discuss a multi-purpose sewing desk to fit in a space on the mezzanine floor of our open plan style home.
We had many detailed discussions over the requirements, and Edward visited the space to get a feel for what would work there. One of main criteria was to incorporate a mechanical lift for my sewing machine, so I am able to stow it easily and keep it readily available.
As well as being a most attractive piece of furniture, it is also a pleasure to work at as all features have been ergonomically designed for comfort and practicality. This was not a quick commission as there were many factors to consider, but I now have something that works in all ways and suits our home very well indeed, plus Edward commented that he enjoyed designing something that was a first for him!
The standard of Edward’s work is unsurpassed, and we really feel that we have exactly what we want – no compromises!

Murano Bedroom Suite

We spotted Edward’s wonderful work at an annual exhibition of Sussex Craftsmen. We couldn’t wait to commission him to make our unusual bedroom concept furniture. Ed has been a delight to work with, he and his team are our greatest find, the workshop is a gem, producing the most wonderful works of art in furniture form. Edward’s eye for detail and extensive knowledge, skill and design flair has given us exactly what we dreamed of. Edward has shown great patience, he has led us through the design and build process and has carefully envisaged all practical needs for our furniture. The workmanship and skill of the pieces has made them the finest of any cabinet makers, old and new. Edwards work is the ‘Hygge’ of English furniture. Timeless yet modern with an unsurpassed quality.

Mushrooms Side Tables

I first met Ed at a Sussex Guild event at Michelham Priory, where I fell immediately for his incredible work. After a coffee and a cake, my wife and I had decided to buy Volumptuous, an amazing sideboard made of Oak with exotic lumps that gave it its name. It makes me smile whenever I look at it.
Having caught Ed’s furniture bug, I decided to commission him to make “mushrooms” a set of unusual occasional tables. Initially I met him at his workshop to discuss the idea in principle, followed by a coffee at my place to look at designs and wood samples. He is totally passionate and obsessive about detail and quality, but at the same time very easy to talk to and for me most importantly grounded and down to earth.
I was impressed with his ability to transform what I had in my head into something that I now have in my living room, which is functional and beautiful.
I will ask Ed to make more furniture for me. I enjoy the product and the process and would recommend anyone who wants a special experience to give it a go!

Dining Table and Sideboard

We have commissioned a number of challenging and innovative pieces from Edward over the past three years. Not only is he a fine craftsman, but he has the rare ability to combine a flair for design with a keen understanding of the materials he works with. At a personal level he is a pleasure to work with, has a professional approach and a commitment to realising and enhancing your vision of the concept you are commissioning, rather than seeking to override it. We firmly believe that Edward is one of the finest cabinet makers of his generation, with a reputation that grows with each new piece of beautiful and unusual furniture he creates.

Inspired Coffee Table

Key to the creation of our stunning coffee table was the consultation process. We had already met and chatted to Ed before we decided to ask him to help us find a table that worked for us. Neither of us can pretend to have design credentials. Ed made it easy to talk to him and to listen to his advice. He brought together his skills and our aspirations perfectly – no mean feat! As it happens we didn’t like the first suggestions he sketched so Ed made some more. From these the final specification emerged. We are very pleased with the table – which has great presence with a lightness of touch. It also rests happily on the carpet which I’d describe as striking rather than “eccentric”! Mr Johnson has, with great attention to detail, listened carefully, advised authoritatively and produced for us a work of art.

Jewellery Box

Edward Johnson is of a new generation of young British designers who are demonstrating what a fertile ground Britain continues to be for innovation and excellence in design. You want to touch and stroke his work as well as gaze upon it. Talent like this deserves recognition but cannot exist without patronage. People who are prepared to invest in his time and vision. The return is not only an item of beauty for a loved one or if you are feeling particularly self-indulgent yourself but a sense that you are making a contribution however modest to insuring the continuation of a fine tradition. Priceless!
