Winch Design, The OWO Penthouse and an Art Deco inspired drinks cabinet!
We were delighted to have the opportunity to collaborate on this wonderful project in London with Winch Design. We have four pieces on show at The OWO Penthouse that includes our Orbis drinks cabinet, Chichester Mirror, a set of Ed, Edd & Eddy nest of tables and our small but perfectly formed Linear Murano watch box.
With our furniture looking totally at home in this beautiful space, we are thrilled it is in great company, alongside the incredible craft, design and art from a superb selection of fellow creatives and designers.
The OWO Penthouse has been designed by international studio Winch Design, who combine their decades of experience in creating superyacht, private aircraft and residences for ultra-high net worth clients, with a timeless and joyful scheme that champions craftsmanship, artistry and The OWO’s historical and cultural significance.
In the design of the five-bedroom lateral penthouse, Winch has collaborated with over forty award-winning suppliers to craft and source bespoke pieces of furniture, fabrics, artwork and accessories, creating a residence that feels carefully curated over time. Featuring a private gym and sauna, cinema and games room, staff quarters and expansive terraces with panoramic views, The OWO Penthouse is a truly one-of-a-kind residence.
Understandably, the project has gained a considerable amount of press including this article in The Times that talks about the property and its background in more detail.
Orbis drinks cabinet
Orbis, Edward’s Art Deco inspired drinks cabinet – with a contemporary twist, comes as part of a limited edition of three. The award-winning cabinet (Bespoke Guild Mark No. 458) embodies innovation and precision craftsmanship at its best.
“The Bespoke Guild Mark is the ultimate accolade for designer-makers, recognising excellence in design, materials, craftsmanship and function for exquisite pieces of furniture made as single items or a limited run and installations of bespoke fitted furniture. It is awarded to only the most meticulous, luxurious and highly crafted pieces of bespoke furniture and, since its launch in 1958, has been the apex of distinctions for UK designer-makers.”
The Furniture Makers’ Company, Bespoke Guild Mark.
Orbis forms part of Edward’s Ripples Collection that is made using an original technique, developed and perfected in his workshop. Edward spent many hours designing, refining and prototyping this technique to enable the successful crafting of this unique rippled effect in timber.
Inspired by the action of a stone dropping into water, Edward’s concept was to give the illusion of concentric ripples engulfing the entire form, bringing movement, life and softness to the surfaces. It is a concept that can be adapted and applied to many pieces of his unique furniture.
The image below shows Orbis complemented beautifully with Hannah White’s incredible sculptural textile artwork ‘Ammonite Shadow: Copper Asteroceras’. Hannah says, ‘When collaborating on the project I saw an image of a bespoke Edward Johnson cabinet on mood boards created by Winch Design. I fell in love with its warm wooden tones and the curved form. I created my textile artwork to sit alongside this beautiful cabinet’.
We believe this harmonious pairing is a match made in heaven!
Edd, Edd & Eddy nest of tables and Chichester Mirror
Both the Ed, Edd & Eddy tables and Chichester Mirror are from Edward’s classic and contemporary Sussex Collection. This collection reflects his natural design aesthetic, characterised by clean, elegant lines and curved forms with stylish detailing: balancing form with function.
Every element of the Ed, Edd & Eddy tables have been meticulously considered including the elegant detailing of the legs. They have been carefully designed to sit functionally around the arm of a sofa or nest neatly away.
The elegant Chichester Mirror has been designed to lean against a wall or nestle in a corner. The inverted tear-drop frame is made from one continuous length of timber that joins the base with a clever swivel joint that allows the mirror to lean at any angle.
Linear Murano watch box
The Linear Murano watch box has been designed to hold up to six treasured timepieces and forms part of Edward’s Murano Collection.
The Murano Collection was inspired by a visit to the island of Murano, where Venetian master craftsmen have been producing glassware for centuries by floating layers of different coloured glass through one another to produce exquisite patterns.
Edward has refined and perfected his unique technique and the Murano veneers can be adapted and applied to many of his designs.
Many thanks to the team at Winch Design for collaborating with us on this incredible project at The OWO Penthouse, and to Darren Chung for the interior photographs.
Our background with Winch Design
We have been working in collaboration with Winch Design for a few years. Back in 2020 we were featured as part of ‘Under Winch’s Wing’ on their website alongside some truly incredible artisans and craftspeople.
Under Winch’s Wing was established during the COVID-19 crisis to provide support to the smallest craftspeople and suppliers whose irreplaceable skill has been bringing the Winch Design portfolio to life for the past 35 years.
Winch Design wanted to offer support to the smallest suppliers and artisans who help to bring the Winch portfolio to life. The artisans and craftspeople included in the portfolio were hand selected by Andrew Winch and the team in recognition of their craft, with the wish to ensure not only the survival, but the success of their studios now and into the future.
“The Winch Ethos is predicated on certain values, initiated by Andrew Winch over thirty years ago […] the importance of creating spatial energy and emotion, of designing spaces that are balanced, beautiful and uplifting and of always being inquisitive for more knowledge.”
