In this article we delve into the business to business (B2B) high-end commercial furniture projects we undertake and highlight a few characteristic projects..
At Edward Johnson we work on a wide range of commercial furniture contracts, alongside the furniture we design and make for our private clients’ homes. These commercial projects can include high-end bespoke furniture, small editions, specialist joinery, fitted furniture and contract furniture.
Whether these projects are destined for a commercial or a domestic setting we approach each project with the same mindset and apply our expertise and skillset accordingly to meet our clients’ requirements.
“Edward works incredibly hard to deliver within the available project and budget without compromising on quality, he is patient and flexible in his approach, working with the client to find the right solution on-site and during construction..”

Working for industry professionals and businesses
We work for design professionals and businesses who have an eye for detail and who require a high-end product, such as interior designers, architects, contractors and on occasion high-end retailers.
Within this area of the business, we tailor our design or manufacturing input depending on the nature of the project. For example, this can involve manufacturing to a predetermined design, working collaboratively with industry professionals and specialist craftspeople, or a complete design and manufacturing service. All in all, it’s a healthy balance!
Commercial projects
Display cabinets and desks for Asprey
We were approached by Asprey to design and manufacture multiple display cases and desks for a selection of their stores in London, New York and Japan. The furniture has a high gloss lacquer finish in their signature purple and green brand colours. The display cabinets were made in a variety of sizes and include safety laminated glass cases, locks, drawers, lighting and bevelled edge detailing; additionally, the desks have a leather inset top.
Design Brief:
We worked in collaboration on the design for these pieces having been given an outline concept featuring the facetted angles. We rolled this motif across the various items and produced all the technical drawings, incorporating the intricate detailing with lighting, locks, glass and moving components.
This project for Asprey is a good example of high-end contract furniture. Contract furniture is a term used in the industry for furniture that is used outside of the domestic setting. This could be for offices, shops, restaurants, hotels, or even highly industrial settings – in other words furniture manufactured solely for commercial environments. Typically, this type of furniture is likely to be used more heavily than domestic furniture. Therefore, careful consideration must be given to ensure it is robust enough for its purpose.
Reception Desk for Bella Figura
This reception desk was a one-off bespoke signature piece both designed and manufactured for the Bella Figura showroom in Chelsea Harbour, London. For this project we worked in collaboration with Bella Figura and interior stylist Alyce Taylor.
Design Brief:
We worked in collaboration on this design from the early stages. Having been given a sketched layout of the showroom and a mood board depicting dark timbers and bronze-like patinated metal, Edward worked up the proposals. Following client feedback, we finalised the design with detailed production drawings and timber and metal samples.
The desk design is T-shaped and closed at one end with a wide leg, another leg runs centrally down the entire length of the table. The tabletop and end leg flow into one another and are made from a beautiful rich dark fumed oak. The desk is designed for either standing or sitting at on high stools. The base has a patinated bronzed metal effect finish and is flush and visible through the length of the fumed oak top. We have also designed and manufactured bespoke fitted display cabinetry for the same showroom.
Desk for Studioloop Design
This stunning walnut desk made for Studioloop Design perfectly showcases a one-off high-end domestic piece. For this project we worked in close collaboration with Studioloop and specialist metal workers to bring the desk to fruition. We were responsible for making the solid walnut top with curved drawers which involved 5-axis CNC milling, alongside hand cut dovetail joints, and a hand applied oil finish.
Design Brief:
With furniture design experience Studioloop came to us with a well worked-through design that only required a manufacturing eye to finalise the technical and structural aspects. We worked the design up into detailed production drawings and collaborated with the client and the metal workers to realise the vision.
