Island Innovation: A Sculptural Centrepiece with Ingenious Detail
Not every kitchen project we undertake involves a complete redesign and manufacture of the entire space. We often receive requests to create feature pieces within kitchen environments. We are the first to acknowledge that we cannot compete on price for standard square kitchen carcasses; instead, our strength lies in areas that require exceptional craftsmanship and creative aptitude.
Just like any room in the house, a thoughtfully selected standout bespoke element can unify the area and transform the overall atmosphere. This case study highlights the artistry involved in creating a unique island unit.

In this project, we had the pleasure of teaming up with an architect who had a real eye for design. One of the most exciting features we created together was a sliding worktop that transforms into a pop-up breakfast bar at either end of the island. The engineering behind it was quite a challenge—sliding a hefty 200kg slab of stone smoothly and safely wasn’t easy. We opted for a high-quality Japanese track system that allowed the top to glide effortlessly, showcasing a wonderful blend of practicality and elegance.
One of the key requests from the client was to make the stone top look thinner than it actually was. By skilfully chamfering the underside and recessing it into the carcass, we gave the illusion of a 40mm stone appearing like a mere 8mm at the edges. It was a subtle touch, but it made a big difference in how the piece looked.

Materials, texture, and craftsmanship were at the heart of this project. We really enjoyed working with the beautiful, rich texture of traditional oak. Edward, our lead designer, handpicked several boards sourced from a sawmill just ten miles from the client’s home, which made it feel even more special. We gave the carcass a dramatic sandblasted finish, while the sturdy pedestals were scorched, brushed, and ebonised, showcasing the stunning grain of the wood.
The standout feature was a bank of twelve drawers, each framed with precision-cut finger joints that highlighted the quarter-sawn, medullary rayed oak. The client designed each drawer with a sleek finger pull that runs down the sides, enhancing the overall look while maintaining a refined and understated aesthetic. It was a collaborative effort that truly brought the design to life.
Curves and Connection: A Nautilus-Inspired Family Kitchen
In any kitchen, the flow of people within the space the cornerstone to any design, and this particular kitchen case study exemplifies that principle beautifully. As a new build project, we were fortunate to begin with a blank canvas, allowing for limitless creative possibilities. Edward, our lead designer, initially outlined a rough concept while carefully considering the room’s entry and exit points, as well as the principal south-facing bifold doors that seamlessly connect to the terrace. The architecture of the house, inspired by the exquisite shape of a nautilus shell, infused the design with graceful curves and organic lines.
Starting from a plan view, Edward sketched out the key functional areas of the kitchen: food storage, food preparation, cooking, and washing up. Recognising the importance of minimising lengthy distances between these critical zones, we aimed to establish an efficient layout, acknowledging that cooking is not a linear process but a dynamic experience. A dedicated, solid oak butcher’s block was thoughtfully positioned near the fridge, complemented by a smaller prep sink nearby for added convenience.

To maintain a clean and uncluttered aesthetic, a bespoke oak tambour was meticulously crafted to discreetly enclose essential cooking accessories, strategically placed next to a bank of ovens, warming drawers, and an induction hob. We designed two sweeping island units that foster a collaborative cooking environment, allowing family members to prepare and create meals together without tripping over each other. Wrapping the main island unit, an organic bar beautifully transitions into a casual serving and eating area, perfect for leisurely meal times and gatherings.
Once the framework of the design was established, we delved into selecting the right materials to enhance each element. The harmonious blend of oak and walnut, in various cuts, lent warmth and sophistication to the space. The island units showcased an exquisite book-matched crown-cut walnut pattern, while the appliance cabinetry boasted solid walnut paired with feature doors in stunning burr oak. Fabric-laminated glass elegantly formed the doors of the integrated fridge, while a unique patina resin metal effect added a contemporary flair to the island units.
From the very outset of this project, our collaboration with the client and the skilled contractors was paramount. Together, we provided a comprehensive design, manufacture, and installation service that ensured every detail was meticulously crafted to embody the heart and soul of this family kitchen.

“We have commissioned a number of challenging and innovative pieces from Edward over the past three years. Not only is he a fine craftsman, but he has the rare ability to combine flair for design with a keen understanding of the materials he works with.
At a personal level, he is a pleasure to work with, has a professional approach and a commitment to realising and enhancing your vision of the concept you are commissioning, rather than seeking to override it. We firmly believe that Edward is one of the finest cabinet makers of his generation, with a reputation that grows with each new piece of beautiful and unusual furniture he creates.”
